Shermco Industries is seeking a Field P&C Engineer/Specialist (Protection & Controls) to join our growing team of power system professionals.
The Protection & Controls (P&C) Field Engineer/Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of electrical power systems. This position is responsible for the installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of protection relays, control systems, communication equipment, and substation automation components used in transmission, distribution, and industrial power systems.
Installation, Commissioning & Maintenance
Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relay systems, powerline carrier equipment, digital fault recorders (DFRs), remote terminal units (RTUs), and communication processors.
Protection & Control Functional Testing
Perform functional testing of protection and control circuitry associated with transmission lines, high-voltage bus systems, transformers, circuit breakers, feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks.
RTU & Telecom Upgrades
Execute RTU and telecom system upgrades for various utility and industrial clients, ensuring accurate configuration and reliable system performance.
Relay Expertise – Preferred Platforms
SEL Relays (Required/Strongly Preferred): Experience with devices such as SEL-311C, 311L, 387, 411L, 421, 487B, 487E, 487V, 587, 587Z, and 787.
GE Relays (Desired): Experience with GE C30, D60, F35, L90, T35, and T60.
RTU & Communication Processor Experience
Required experience with major RTU and communication processor platforms including GE, Telvent, SEL, Cooper, and Novatech.
Documentation & Reporting
Accurately review, document, and submit test results, ensuring compliance with client requirements and regulatory standards.
Drawings & Diagrams Interpretation
Interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring and schematic drawings, and communication configuration files. Identify discrepancies and escalate as needed.
Administrative & Equipment Responsibilities
Complete required time sheets, expense reports, and documentation accurately and on time.
Maintain company equipment and assigned vehicle in good, safe, and professional condition.
Equivalent technical training through the military, such as Army Prime Power, Air Force Electrical Power Production, or Navy Seabees programs.
Completion of recognized industry training programs in Protection & Controls, relay testing, or substation commissioning.
Certifications (Preferred/Desired):
NETA Certification (Level I–IV) or equivalent testing certification.
Utility or manufacturer relay training (SEL, GE, etc.) is an asset.
